Are Nikons and Canons capable?

Are they just toys compared to a Hasselblad Medium Format Modular 503CW Camera with a German-made Carl Zeiss Optical Lens and a Phaseone 60 megapixel Digital Camera Back?
Seamless, your claim that the Leica is second rate to its competitors is absolutely ridiculous,

Let’s compare it to the Nikon d2xs which was released about the same time as the M8.

Nikon d2xs sensor: 1.5x crop
Leica M8 sensor: 1.3x crop

Body quality: No question. Leica rules.

Lens compatibility:
D2xs: uses Nikkor lenses
Leica m8: uses Leica lenses.

Leica Lenses are much more highly regarded than Nikkor lenses.
Let’s see you use a Leica lens in your Nikon.

Anti-alias filter:
Leica m8 doesn’t use one.
So per pixel sharpness is noticeably better than the Nikon.

The lack of autofocus in the Leica is understandable since it’s a rangfinder camera.

Image Quality: Leica wins. hands down.

Now lets see you compare the Nikon D3 to the Leica S2. hahaha.

BTW, I don’t have a Phaseone 60 megapixel back.
What I use is the p45.

And yes, I have a Leica M8.
I know it will last much longer than your Nikon toy.

  1. Mere Mortal Said,

This is obviously a troll question.

With that said, the Hasselblad is superior for fashion, portrait and fine art photography, however, I would rather use a Nikon/Canon for sports or wildlife.

I have a Hasselblad 500 C/M that I use for landscape work and I can attest that the tonality of the Zeiss glass is some of the most luminous and pretty I have ever seen.

Ultimately, a camera is just a tool. Use the right tool for the job and everything is cool.

Were 35 mm film cameras capable or did you have to have a medium or large format film camera ? Yes they are capable yes they can do a good job uinder many circumstances. No they will never give you the image quality of a medium format digital camera. Its a matter of what you need/want and what can deliver that

Added: While I agree with death that a camera is just a tool and that a better camera will not make someone a better photographer. A better tool can let you perform to your ability. The analogy I have used before here is that if you take the best concert violinist you know and give them a 50 dollar violin they will play well but if you give them a stradavarius there will be difference in how they sound when they play even though in this case also the violin is also a tool. Conversly give the strad to someone like me and it will still sound like someone is beating a cat even though its a masterpiece of workmanship

  3. Death. Said,

Until I find a camera that can take itself around the world to take photos, get the perfect lighting itself, find the perfect composition itself, etc., I still stand that it’s not the camera that takes the photo. It’s the photographer.

If you give an idiot a Hasselblad, that doesn’t mean they’re going to get good images.

If you give a good photographer a cheap, settingless disposable camera, they’ll still get good images.

A good camera is only a tool of a good photographer. There are some cameras better than others for certain purposes — but I don’t think the camera is ever as important as the person holding it.

    HA!

Different camera types are used by different photographers to cover various kinds of subjects.

Editorial, sports, events, wildlife, scientific, industrial and much, much more depend upon Nikon and Canon systems

Medium format cameras are used by photographers that shoot products in studio’s and advertising on location, but you will usually find that they too use DSLR’s (Nikon and Canon usually).

If you continue with your suggestion that the smaller DSLR’ are toys when compared to Hasselblads, then I too can make to suggestion that the Hasselblads are just toys when compared to a 4×5 or 8×10 view camera, however we know this is incorrect. Each camera has its own place in the commercial and art world of photography

The toy cameras are the ones with plastic lens elements, fixed focus lenses, and sensors that are less than a half-inch on the diagonal.

I cannot image shooting sports using a Hasselblad camera. First of all there are no 900 mm or 1200 mm telephoto lenses for the Hasselblad system and if there were, who could afford them or could even lift them?

Well you have at least three answers of photo wannabees. None of their answers make any sense and you can tell that they don’t even have cheap point and shoot cameras.

What do you want to use it for. If you just want a name it could be like buying a Mack truck to haul a one pound package. What is your budget? do you want film or digital? Again you could be over qualifying such as buying 12+Megapixle when an 8-10 would give you everything you need.

In all reality after re-reading your question I am very sure that a three pack of disposable from CVS or walgreen is more than you know how to use, and way above your budget.pp

Cedric - you’re a tedious troll. It would be better if you had some entertainment value. This is just a variation on your post about the second rate Leica M8 you claim to have bought, and they are second rate in terms of the cameras that they have to compete with.

For the readers who may drop in thinking there might be some value to the question, the high end Canons and Nikons are fully capable tools chosen by professionals and advanced amateurs because they do the job. In comparing them to a medium format camera, there is more overlap in the real world than people think. For many applications some pros shoot one, other pros shoot the other and customers happily pay for either. As Fhotoace pointed out, you don’t really want to shoot sports with a Hassie and the idea of using one for a working photojournalist is absurd. If I’m going to shoot food, architectural, or aireal assignments, then you are in medium to large format arena.

Toys, hardly. But then again, you’ve never demonstrated that you knew what you are talking about.

ttpawpaw - you answer very capably regarding pain. Clear, concise, germane answers and you don’t overstep yourself. Kudos. I wish everyone did that, but here, you’re out of your element.

MM is a very accomplished photographer.
Fhotoace is also an accomplished photographer.
Jtc I only know by their posts, but they seem knowledgeable.
I also only know Death by his posts. He’s less knowledgeable than some, but easily knowledgeable enough to be on point here. If he posts a link sometime, I would be interested in seeing his work.

That’s four people posting, all of whom made on point comments. Two of them I know to be accomplished professionals. So who were you referring to? With the only possible referrants for your comment being them as I write this, you have just demonstated what happens when you step to far away from what you are competent to comment on.

You are probably absolutely right about Cedric as far as anyone can tell.
