If hardware is irrelevant to good photography why do people use the Hasselblad H3D?

My guess is that the “irrelevant” comment is over stated.

The user needs both the skills AND the tools. The better the tools, the easier it is for the craftsman to do their job in general, but as you can guess a $25,000 set of Snap-On tools will not make your neighbor a NASCAR head mechanic.

Hasselblad makes wonderful gear and gear helps . Quality of lens, precision of focus, RELIABILITY are all important. To have a eye to see what you can create and a skill (inate or learned) at composure and creation or capture of expression and a feeling for impact are more important but fine equipment has a refining ability to what you make. Or some such stuff.

Hardware is much relevant to good photography, quite on the contrary, and matter the most in the case of Hasselblad is its large picture format allowing an improved resolution, and the outstanding quality of Hasselblad lenses.

Hasselblad cameras were chosen for all Appolo missions - not coincidentally…

Maybe hardware is irrelevant to good street photography or good wedding photography, but i's certainly not irrelevant to good landscape photography, or good fashion photography, or other demanding situations…

Imagine the difference an old $500 used Toyo-View with a 45mm lens makes against the $40000 Hasselblad for a big print of a landscape photo. No comparison whatsoever.

Now imagine a top fashion photographer trying to keep up in the studio with a 4×5 view camera or printing posters with a 35mm SLR. No comparison whatsoever again.

I bet you would also prefer shooting your landscapes with 4×5 Velvia over the Hasselblad even if they gave it to you for free, and you definitely dream of a future version of a 4×5 250megapixel single shot sensor. Wouldn't that improve your photography in some cases?

They use the H3D because it has quality lenses and a huge memory capability (nothing else out there has 31 Megapixel capture capabilities, at this time).

It just happens to be Hasselblad… If Mamiya had it, they’d use Mamiya… they used to use Nikons in space… it has everything to do with lens quality and with digital, file size.

    Common sense, not marketing.

The snap on tool thing peaked my interest. I worked in customer relations for a large Volvo dealership and once when I was in the Service Manager’s office a man came in looking for a job as a mechanic and was asked if he knew how to fix a car. His reply was “I have $20,000 worth of tools.”

Several replies have mentioned Hasselblad lenses. Hasselblad makes no lenses. As a matter of fact, Hasselblad is now nothing more than another Japanese camera.

If there are no mechanical camera problems, the camera itself does not take the picture. It is framed by the photographer and delivered to the camera by a lens. The things that a photographer has to look for is good glass insofar as equipment is concerned.

However, there are those that think that they must look the part and therefore go out and buy certain camera manufacturer’s products. Thus you get an image in the consumer’s mind that one product is better than the other. Then you have Mary Jane Goingtobeaprofessional photographer asking about brands of “professional cameras.”

The equipmment is not irrelevant. People are correct when they say that a good camera will not make a poor photographer into a good one. You still need knowledge and skills achieved through study and practice. But better equipmment will let a photographer perform to the full scope of his abilities.

The analogy I use it that you can select the best violinist in the world ( selelct your favorite) . Give him a 200 dollar violin and he will play well. Give the same violinist who played well with the 200 dollar violin a Stradivarius. I'll bet you a six pack of your favorite beer right now he sounds better.

By the same token give the Stradivarius to a 5 year old beginner and they are still a 5 year old beginner violinist.
